Expanding Jangala’s work in Northern France

Roots hold up a Big Box

Organisation: Roots

Location: Calais, France

Status: Live

Sector: Refugee support

Deployed: January 2022

Jangala began its journey in the Calais Jungle. In late 2015, our founding members came together to build a network to cover the refugee camp of 20,000 people with Wi-Fi. This installation sparked the idea to create Big Box, as the team saw first-hand the need to lower the barriers to getting people and charities online in humanitarian emergencies.

Since then, we’ve deployed Big Boxes with our longest-standing partners, Care4Calais and Mobile Refugee Support (MRS), who work around the clock to provide essential needs support to the refugees there. Over the years, we have connected nearly 10,000 people through these two charities.

In late 2021, we expanded our work in Calais again, deploying a Big Box to Roots, a grassroots charity providing key services to refugees, including food, shelter, medical support and charging and Wi-Fi capabilities. Since switching on their Big Box in November 2021 Roots has connected over 4,500 people to date, making it Jangala’s most used Big Box in the world (as of June 2023).
