At-home connectivity for refugees in Greece

Through our education partner, Amala, we have provided connectivity to young refugees around Athens so that they can get online and access Amala’s transformative education programmes despite COVID-19 restrictions.

Amala run innovative online and blended courses for young people whose education has been disrupted due to displacement. Since covid-19 lockdowns began, education delivery has been increasingly difficult and with in-person sessions unsafe for social distancing, students have had to rely heavily on studying online.

Jangala provided Amala with four Get Boxes for students without sufficient connectivity to continue their education. Equipped with the systems, and powered by data provided by Amala, the young refugees can keep studying their ‘Online Economics for Positive Change’ course.

One student said that data costs prohibited her from accessing the internet, while another said that their online access through public spaces such as a community centre or library or public space had stopped: ‘In corona time we needed more internet from before.’

Get Box’s traffic-shaping and ad-blocking means that data will go 40% further than when it’s run through a phone or dongle, meaning that Amala can provide data with confidence that their students will get online for their Zoom lessons and be able to complete their online independent work.

This is the fourth collaboration between Amala and Jangala: check out our other projects with URISE, CIBL and Faulu Production in Kenya.
