Connectivity in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Organisation: CEAFPD
Location: Uvira, Democratic Republic of Congo
Status: live
Sector: Education
Deployed: March 2022
Uvira, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, has experienced a long series of conflicts and continues to be marked by violence. As a result, the number of vulnerable children in the region remains at a very high level, and these children are at risk of joining armed groups and militias.
The CEAFPD education centre was established to provide digital skills to this community, so they can access employment opportunities. In a country with one of the lowest levels of internet penetration in the world, the centre focuses on promoting digital literacy among women, children and teachers, to improve the quality of teaching, fight the digital divide and pave the way for career opportunities.
The education centre sees 120 students from the surrounding communities visit every day, and although it was equipped with computers, it had no Wi-Fi until Jangala sent out a Big Box in early 2022.
Not only have staff at CEAFPD used Big Box to expand the scope of the digital skills sessions provided, but they have also taken Big Box to local schools to provide lessons there when the centre is closed.
